This documentary illustrates how children who are deaf or hearing-impaired learn to communicate. It follows Patricia, a four-year-old child who is deaf, and her struggle to acquire language and communication skills. Early scenes of Patricia's involvement at home and at school make obvious her sense of isolation and her anger and frustration at her inability to communicate with family members, teachers, and peers. By the end of the year, as language and communication skills have developed, Patricia is actively and happily involved in school activities and is beginning to converse in sign language with her mother.
